MicroPhyt’s BrainPhyt May Boost Cognition in Older People
A study published in Nutrients explored MicroPhyt’s BrainPhyt, a microalgae extract, for cognitive health in older adults with self-reported memory decline. Over 12 weeks, 43 participants (aged 55-75) received either BrainPhyt or a placebo. Cognitive testing showed that BrainPhyt may improve working memory, attention, and executive function. Additionally, there were positive effects on insulin sensitivity and sleep quality, suggesting broader benefits beyond cognition.

AIDP’s Magtein Might be Beneficial for Sleep
A study published in Sleep Medicine suggests that AIDP’s Magtein (magnesium-L-threonate) may enhance sleep quality and daytime performance. Researchers from Jacksonville University and the University of North Florida assigned 80 participants with sleep issues to take either Magtein or a placebo for 21 days. Results showed improvements in deep, REM, and light sleep, as well as better daytime energy, productivity, and mood in the Magtein group. Objective data from Oura Rings and subjective questionnaires supported these findings. The study was funded by AIDP, and Magtein is distributed by Threotech.

A new clinical study reveals Biotis GOS-OP High Purity’s low dosage efficacy. FrieslandCampina Ingredients’ Biotis GOS-OP (galactooligosaccharide-content of over 90%) High Purity can increase Bifidobacterium in the gut microbiome of healthy women at dosages of 2 g and 1.3 g — the lowest tested dose in the industry, according to a recent study. A novel study has found that Amarasate can act as a natural GLP-1 activator. The active nutraceutical can be taken orally rather than via injection and doesn’t require a prescription — unlike the current GLP-1-activating weight loss drugs on the market. Recent research on the functional ingredient has found that it can reduce cravings by up to 40%, while also lowering feelings of hunger in users by 30%. The trial involved 30 adults.

MDbio Announces Clinical Studies on Sleep, Mood, and Pain Relief Products
3 of MDbio’s products have been clinically studied in 3,500 diverse Americans across several clinical studies. The three products tested in these respective populations were MDrelief, MDcalm, and MDsleep, which are formulated to support pain relief, mood, and sleep, respectively.

  • MDcalm significantly outperformed placebo in supporting mood and sleep measures, according to a clinical study involving 1,461 U.S. adults.
  • MDsleep significantly outperformed placebo in reducing measures of sleep disturbance, anxiety, and stress in clinical studies involving 620 adults, and was associated with improvements to self-reported quality of life.
  • MDrelief was found to significantly reduce measures of pain interference and pain intensity in women below the age of 50, and in general populations, in clinical trials involving 1,160 U.S. adults.

All studies were double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials conducted by Raidcle Science, a public benefit corporation supporting clinical wellness research.

Combination PEA Supplement Reduces Neuropathic Pain by 33%
Supplementation with a 10-element combination supplement alleviates neuropathic pain in patients with diabetic neuropathy, according to a new study (33% reduction in pain score). Published in the journal Nutrients, the research explored the effects of Epineuron, a supplement developed by Greek manufacturer Pharma Unimedis, on relieving diabetic neuropathy-related pain in a group of 73 participants recruited from the outpatient clinic of the Diabetes Center at the University General Hospital of Thessaloniki. Epineuron is formulated with Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), alpha lipoic acid (ALA), vitamins B6, B1, B12 and E, nicotinamide, magnesium and zinc.

The chewable lozenge is claimed to treat cold sores systemically, specifically to “stop virus reproduction, protect cells, strengthen the immune system and help to restore and maintain the lips’ healthy, protective mucous membrane”. A 20-count pack is retailing on Amazon for US$19.95, where accompanying A+P informs consumers that the brand is fast-acting without the mess of cold sore creams.

Fytexia Introduces New Blood Glucose Management Ingredient
Fytexia launched a new ingredient for blood glucose management. Glyco680mg has been formulated to improve postprandial glycemia and reduce risk factors of metabolic disorders. They also performed a randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled study on 10 subjects with prediabetes.

Monteloeder Introduces BeRelief
Monteloeder (SuanNutra) has introduced BeRelief, a botanical blend for musculoskeletal discomfort formulated using machine learning. The blend, featuring rosemary, ashwagandha, and sesame extracts, was selected from a library of 50,000 compounds for their interaction with discomfort receptors. GTCR in Talks to Acquire Stada
US private equity firm GTCR is in advanced talks to acquire Stada, a German pharmaceutical company, with a potential deal valued at around €10 billion (US$11 billion). GTCR is the lead bidder after rival Clayton, Dubilier & Rice dropped out. While Bain Capital and Cinven, Stada’s current private equity owners, could finalize the deal soon, the agreement depends on due diligence and financing. If negotiations falter, Stada may explore other options, such as an IPO.

P&G has launched the #UbahCerita (Change Story) campaign for Sangobion, Indonesia’s top iron supplement. Immunity Launches are Growing (Inova)
Innova Market Insights data indicates that global supplement launches with immune health claims have grown significantly, with a 13% CAGR from July 2019 to June 2024. In the most recent period (July 2023 – June 2024), Vitamins and Minerals dominated the immunity supplement category, accounting for 34% of new launches, with Vitamin C as the top ingredient at 36%.

Health Claims Matter (Prinova Survey)
As consumers become more health conscious, they are increasingly checking product labels for claims and advice targeting their areas of concern, according to a Prinova-commissioned survey. The survey of 1,582 adult consumers in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, and the USA revealed:

  • 70%+ were “much more” or “slightly more” likely to buy a food or beverage product if the packaging carried a health claim
  • Younger consumers, particularly Millennials, were more likely to be influenced by health claims vs older groups
  • The three health claims most likely to influence purchase decisions were low sugar, weight management, and energy support
  • Millennials were keener on weight management claims vs other age groups, while energy claims scored highest among those aged 18-44

Other notable findings from the survey include:

  • Probiotics topped a list of ingredients that were most likely to influence purchase decisions; other gut health ingredients scored highly – fibre (3rd) and prebiotics (6th); vitamins & minerals ranked second
  • Consumers’ top three health concerns were digestive / gut health (85%); healthy ageing/longevity (84%) and fatigue (82%)
  • Among regular gamers, 61% used food or nutrition products to improve their performance; B vitamins were the most popular with those aged 18-44 years

Reckitt has discontinued Queen V, a vaginal hygiene and wellness brand focused on Gen Z and Millennial consumers, according to Beauty Independent. This decision comes three years after Reckitt acquired the brand, which was relaunched in 2022 with a focus on “Micro-V-Iome”-friendly products designed to support the vaginal microbiome.

Epitomee’s Weight Management Capsule Cleared by US FDA
The FDA has cleared Epitomee Medical’s Epitomee Capsule, a drug-free, ingestible medical device for weight management in adults with a BMI of 25-40 kg/m2. The capsule absorbs water in the stomach, expanding into a 3D matrix that promotes a sense of fullness, aiding weight loss. Stress Management Supplements Trends
In a global stress management supplement market expected to reach over $1 billion by 2034. According to SPINS market data for the 52 weeks ending July 14, 2024, the stress management supplement category was valued at nearly $3.9 million, up 8.2% from the year prior. Adaptogenic botanical ashwagandha continues to lead the category with over $72 million in sales but has seen a 16% decline year on year (YOY), following a 7.6% decline from a year prior. Other supplement ingredients trending in the top five over the last few years include signal blocker and chemical messenger GABA ($22.8 million, down 2.1% YOY), HPA-axis regulator magnesium ($10.2 million, up 13.8% YOY), and amino acid and serotonin booster 5-HTP ($9.3 million, down 25.3% YOY)—each regulating stress factors through their own mechanisms. Others appear to be creeping their way into the top rankings including kava ($3.6 million, up 125.7% YOY) and theanine ($2.6 million, up 49.8% YOY). For mushrooms in the category, reishi registered $572,320 in sales (up 14.6% YOY), followed by chaga with $521,880 (up 1,256.3% YOY), cordyceps with $370,089 (down 72.9%), and a mushroom “other” line item with $83,893 (up 29.7% YOY).
